General Info:

In 2009, Pitchshifter started to write their seventh full-length studio album with a working title of "Sprint Finish" in vocalist JS Clayden's personal studio in Los Angeles, California.

Ultimately, that album was never produced or released. This song, "Apply Yourself," is one of the raw demos from that time. As a demo, this version of the song is not produced or mastered.

After a 10-year hiatus from live shows, the band played six shows in England in November 2018. By fan demand on social media, the band chose made this track available.

Song Inspiration:

Per JS Clayden (vocals): Lyrically, this song is a collection of all of the inspiring words of encouragement that I received when "expressing my individualism in a manner not in keeping with expected norms" whilst growing up in working-class Britain (except for the words in parentheses in verse one, they're supposed to be the Id on my shoulder telling me to deliberately do the opposite--such a nice boy).

lyrics

Lyrics:

Just sit back and watch me go.

Keep your head down (walk in to the center of the room).
Don't make contact (stare at everyone you meet).
Don't ask questions (question everything you see).
'Cause this is all designed to keep you on your feet.

Just keep your head down don't make waves.
And this will all make sense someday.

If you could just apply yourself, not so distracted.
We'd all be so less disappointed.

Just keep your head down don't make waves.
And this will all make sense someday.

If you could just apply yourself, not so distracted.
We'd all be so less disappointed.
Just think of your future self, and those around you.
We'd all be so less disappointed (in you).

Just keep your head down don't make waves.
And this will all make sense someday.

If you could just apply yourself, not so distracted.
We'd all be so less disappointed.
Just think of your future health.
We'd all be so less disappointed (in you).
